11 electrocuted in a religious event in Tamil Nadu

Nagpur: At least 11 people, including 3 children were killed on Wednesday after a temple car or a chariot came in contact with a live electricity wire in Thanjavur district in Tamil Nadu.

Chief minister MK Stalin is scheduled to visit and announced an ex-gratia of Rs 5 lakh for the family of the deceased. As of now, a total of 14 people are under treatment at the Tanjore Medical College Hospital, out of which two are critical.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi took to Twitter and expressed grief over the incident. He said, “Deeply pained by the mishap in Thanjavur, Tamil Nadu. My thoughts are with the bereaved families in this hour of grief. I hope those injured recover soon.”

Police said that the incident occurred when the temple palanquin or temple car they were standing in came into contact with a high-transmission line at Appar Madam temple in Kalimedu. Inspector General of Police, Central Zone, Tiruchirappalli, V Balakrishnan said, “A case has been registered in the matter and an investigation is underway.”
