Nagpur: Just a few hours after his bizarre ‘enjoy rape’ comment gained massive outrage, senior Congress leader and former Assembly speaker Ramesh Kumar on Friday apologised for his remark in the assembly.
On Thursday night, Kumar took to twitter and said, “My intention was not trivialise or make light of the heinous crime, but an off-the-cuff remark! I will choose my words carefully henceforth!”
I would like to express my sincere apologies to everyone for the indifferent and negligent comment I made in today’s assembly about “Rape!” My intention was not trivialise or make light of the heinous crime, but an off the cuff remark! I will choose my words carefully henceforth!
The rape comment made by Kumar did not just put him under trouble but also Speaker Vishweshawar Hegde Kageri for laughing away at the remark. The duo faced criticism from all quarters within the Congress party. The comment was made by the Congress leader during a discussion on farmers’ issues when the speaker questioned how the session could be conducted if time was allotted to everyone.
In response to that, Kumar said, “There is a saying that when rape is inevitable, lie down and enjoy it. That is exactly the position which you are in.” What’s more shocking here is that the state assembly laughed in response to the statement.
Clearing the party’s stand, Congress spokesperson Randeep Surjewala took to twitter and said, “Congress Party disapproves the exchange of highly objectionable & insensitive banter between Karnataka Assembly Speaker & Sr. Congress MLA in the House. Speaker as custodian & Sr legislators are expected to be role models & should desist from such unacceptable behaviour.”
