Nagpur: Several countries in Europe and Asia witness a surge in Covid-19 cases, Maharashtra’s health department has asked the districts to increase surveillance and warned that the situation in the state could change dramatically in the next few weeks.

Additional chief secretary Dr Pradeep Vyas in the notice asked all the districts to take measures to avoid crowding and stress upon appropriate masking, proactively identify clusters and step-up surveillance of severe acute respiratory infection (SARI) and Influenza-like illnesses (ILI).

As per the letter issued on Thursday, the health department has also asked the districts to push up vaccination coverage as Maharashtra was much behind the national average. Vyas said, “Though at present we are quite comfortable with around just 2,000 active cases, the situation may dramatically change over the next few weeks.”

He further added, “Earlier, the increase in Covid cases was limited to south Asian countries but now cases are also increasing rapidly in China and Europe. Weekly new cases in the world are now more than 11 million with weekly growth of 8-10%.”
