Nagpur: Maharashtra chief minister Uddhav Thackeray will chair a Covid-19 taskforce meeting today to review the present situation in the state.

The meeting is likely to take place at 3:30pm at the Chief minister’s office with all the officials including healthcare personnel. According to sources, the chief minister is set to impose more restrictions in the cities where there is a Covid-19 surge. The development comes just a few hours after Mumbai recorded over 2,500 daily Covid-19 cases. On Wednesday, Maharashtra recorded 3,900 Covid-19 cases.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has imposed section 144 till January 7 due to a surge in the Covid-19 cases. The Mumbai civic body plans to increase hospital infrastructure and arrange for medication and oxygen. Chief minister Uddhav Thackeray said all the public places in the city will remain shut on December 31 and strict action will be taken against establishments that violate the guidelines issued.

Maharashtra has recorded 252 Omicron cases till date, most of them reported from Mumbai. As per Dr Shashank Joshi, the doubling rate in the first wave was 12 days, in the second wave it was 20 days and now the doubling rate stands at four days.
