Yavatmal MBBS student stabbed to death in campus, raises questions over security

Nagpur: A final year MBBS student of the Vasantrao Naik Government Medical College & Hospital, Yavatmal was allegedly murdered on Wednesday as per the police.

The deceased has been identified as 24-year-old Ashok Pal who hailed from Thane. According to the police officials, Pal was reportedly found in a severely injured situation near the college hostel at around 9pm. The students, staff and the resident doctors of the campus immediately started questioning the security of the campus and decided to hold strike on Thursday.

The 24-year-old was returning to the hostel from the library at around 8:30pm. The students passing by spotted Pal lying in a pool of blood and immediately called the authorities and rushed him to the accident ward of the hospital.

Pal was admitted to the accident ward of the hospital where he later succumbed to his injuries. According to the complainant filed by medical superintendent of the college, Dr Surendra Bhuyar, at first they thought that Pal had met with an accident but later discovered the stab marks on his chest.

The police has till now arrested two suspects– 21-year-old Akshay Gofne and 24-year-old Tushar Nagdevte who hail from Waghapur in Yavatmal. According to the college authorities, the accused were found urinating near the girls hostel after which they got into an argument with Pal and other students. The duo had allegedly threatened Pal. Yavatmal police is currently looking for another accused.

The incident has raised questions on the security of the campus as many students alleged that there are hardly any CCTVs which work. The students, in the strike have been questioning the authorities regarding their safety.
