Austria opts for lockdown for the unvaccinated

Spread the love

Nagpur: Austria on Monday announced that it will be imposing a lockdown on unvaccinated against Covid-19 as infections rise across Europe.

Europe has once again become the hotspot of the pandemic, urging some of the countries to consider re-imposing instructions ahead of Christmas and debating over whether vaccines alone are enough to tackle the novel coronavirus. Last week, Europe accounted for more than half of the average seven-day infections globally and about half of the latest deaths.

The Austrian government says that out of the nine million population in the country, only two million were allowed to leave their homes for limited reasons like travelling for work or shop for essentials. According to a report, Chancellor Alexander Schallenberg said, “My aim is very clear: to get the unvaccinated to get vaccinated, not to lock up the unvaccinated.”

However, thousands took to streets to protest against the lockdown for the unvaccinated. Previously, the unvaccinated were already banned from restaurants, hotels and cultural venues. Not just Austria, other European governments are also eyeing curbs with the Netherlands opting for partial government.
