Third case of Omicron variant detected in India

Nagpur: A third case of the Omicron variant has been detected from Jamnagar, Gujarat on Saturday. A man who returned from Zimbabwe has been found to be positive with the newly-discovered variant.

A 72-year-old man’s sample was sent for genome sequencing after he tested positive for Covid-19 on Thursday, as per PTI. Gujarat health commissioner Jai Prakash Shivhare confirmed that the man was found infected with Omicron. According to reports, a micro-containment zone has been created where the detected person stays and the state officials are tracing the related contacts.

Additional chief secretary, health and family welfare department, Gujarat Manoj Aggarwal said, “We’ve isolated him and are monitoring him. A micro containment zone has been made where he is living. In the area, we will do the tracing, testing of people.”

Joint Secretary of Union Health ministry Law Agrawal while addressing a press conference on Thursday said that two cases of Omicron variant have been detected in India so far. He added that both the cases are from Karnataka.

Agrawal further said that all their primary and secondary contacts have been traced and are under monitoring. “All the protocols are being followed,” he added. The cases have been detected through genome sequencing efforts of the INSACOG consortium of 37 laboratories established by the Health ministry. No serious symptoms of the omicron variant have been reported so far in the country.
