Nagpur: Lawyer-activist Sudha Bharadwaj who was one of the accused in Elgar Parishad-Maoist links case under the provisions of the UAPA, was released after three years from the Byculla jail.

The Supreme Court had rejected a petition by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) court challenging Bombay High Court with regards to her bail. Bharadwaj was among 16 other activists and academicians who were imprisoned and have been granted default bail. Bharadwaj has been in jail since August 2018.

As per the bail conditions, the NIA had said that the lawyer-activist will have to submit her passport and stay in Mumbai city only. However, she later took permission from the court to leave the city limits. The NIA allowed her release on provisional cash bail and a personal bond with directions to finish sureties worth Rs 50,000 within three months. Bharadwaj is expected to visit the nearest police station—either physically or virtually every fortnight.

Bharadwaj, even though has been released from the jail, has been barred from speaking to the media on the Elgar Parishad case or even contacting any of the accused in the case.
