Load shedding in Maharashtra: What’s the reason

Spread the love

Nagpur: The BJP has accused the three-tiered Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government of creating an artificial power shortage in Maharashtra to earn a percentage of commission from buying expensive electricity from the private sector.

However, the state has been facing a power crisis since the past few days.

Maharashtra energy minister Nitin Raut on Friday said there is load shedding in Maharashtra due to an increase in demand for electricity following the relaxation of Covid-19 curbs and a shortage in coal supply.

What do you mean by load shedding?

Load shedding is aimed at removing load from the power system when there is an imbalance between the electricity available and the demand for electricity.

Raut blamed the Centre for poor management of the coal supply and railway racks. He further said that few plants in the state have only six to seven days of coal supply left.

The Ministry of Coal on Sunday stated that the Maharashtra government is receiving more coal at present than in March this year. The ministry added that the MVA-led Maharashtra government is meeting their coal requirement and 70.77 million ton of coal was supplied during the financial year 2021-22.

Mahagenco has supplied 37.131 MT of coal in 2021-22. The daily coal supply to Mahagenco in March 22 was 0.96 lakh ton per day which has been increased further to 1.32 lakh ton per day in April.
