Buldozers enter Delhi, raze down constructions at violence-hit Jahangirpuri

Nagpur: Buldozers make their way in Delhi’s Jahangirpuri to raze illegal constructions owned by riot accused in the violence-hit area.

The North Delhi Municipal Corporation (North MCD) carried out a large-scale anti-encroachment drive in the area on Wednesday. Even after the Supreme Court’s order, the drive wasn’t halted. The gate of a mosque in the violence-hit district was demolished by the North MCD.

Mayor of the North Delhi Municipal Corporation, Raja Iqbal Singh said that they were yet to receive the order and would continue their job of removing illegal structures until they did. Chief Justice NV Ramana directed that the court order ‘must be communicated immediately to the officials.’ After the Chief Justice’s order, the demolition was finally stopped.

The Mayor had termed it as a ‘routine exercise.’ However, the residents of the area had claimed that no notice was served before the anti-encroachment drive. The civic body on Tuesday sought a force of at least 400 police personnel for the two-day anti-encroachment drive.
As per reports, the razing drive had continued for over an hour after the Supreme Court pronounced its status quo order. State BJP chief Adesh Gupta had written a letter to the Mayor appealing to take actions against illegal construction and encroachment in the Jahangirpuri area by running a bulldozer.
