1.5 million jobs lost in August 2021, unemployment rate rises to 8.32%

Nagpur: According to the Centre for Monitoring Indian Economy (CMIE), over 1.5 million people from both formal and informal sectors lost their jobs in August.

The report also stated that the number of employed fell from 399.38 million in July to 397.78 million in August, with almost 1.3 million job losses in the rural sector alone.

The unemployment rate rose from 6.95 per cent in July to 8.32 per cent in August.

The urban unemployment rate rose 1.5 per cent to 9.78 per cent in August.

In July, the urban unemployment rate was 8.3 per cent, 10.07 per cent in June, 14.73 per cent in May and 9.78 per cent in April.

In March, before the second wave of Covid-19 hit India the unemployment rate was 7.27 per cent.

The monthly CMIE data showed that 36 million people were looking for work in August and 30 million in July.

India has been witnessing a crisis in jobs for a long time but the situation worsened due to the coronavirus outbreak.

According to a report, at least eight states in India, including Haryana and Rajasthan are reporting double-digit unemployment rates, which is a sign of worry.
