Night curfew imposed in Maharashtra, BMC bans all new year celebration amid rising cases

Nagpur: Ahead of new year celebrations and amid rising Omicron cases in the state, the Maharashtra government on Friday announced night curfew in the state and prohibited gathering of five or more people at public places during the curfew hours.

The order issued by the Maharashtra government states that a night curfew has been imposed from 9pm to 6am. The order is said to come into effect from December 25. According to the circular issued by the state’s chief secretary, restaurants, gyms, spas and cinema halls will have to operate at 50 per cent capacity.

The number of attendees should not be more than 100 for social, political and religious events in the indoor spaces and less than 250 people in outdoor spaces, as per the circular. Soon after the order was issued, Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) prohibited any kind of New year celebrations in open or indoor spaces.

The Omicron cases in the state rose to 108 on Friday, with 20 new cases. Mumbai reported 683 new Covid-19 cases on Friday, highest since October 6, on the other hand, Maharashtra added 1,410 cases, highest ever since October 27.

Out of 108 Omicron cases in the state, 54 have already been discharged. Most of the cases in the state have been reported in Mumbai.
