Nagpur: Maharashtra deputy chief minister Ajit Pawar on Saturday announced reopening of institutional centres in Pune district from February 1.

Pawar while addressing the media said that schools and colleges will reopen in Pune district from February 1. However, for classes 1 to 8, the timings of the school will be half of the regular timings and for classes 9 and 10, the school will run on regular timing. He added that colleges, too, will function according to their regular timings.

The deputy chief minister also said that consent from parents will be required to attend the school and further decisions for classes 1 to 8 will be taken in the next meeting. This decision comes after Covid-19 cases are declining in Pune district.

Schools across Maharashtra were shut due to the third wave driven by the Omicron variant. The Maharashtra government last week allowed physical classes to resume from January 24 and expressed hope that students would enjoy being back to the classrooms. The nod for reopening of schools was given by chief minister Uddhav Thackeray after a proposal was sent to him by the school education department.

Number of parents and activists in the field of education had strongly opposed the move to shut the schools saying it would adversely affect the students.
