Nagpur: Just a week after a CBI court in Ranchi convicted former Bihar chief minister Lalu Prasad Yadav in fodder scam, the RJD chief was sentenced to five years imprisonment on Monday.
On February 15, Prasad was convicted in the fifth fodder scam case and the court has even imposed a fine of Rs 60 lakh on him. An FIR in this matter was lodged in the year 1996 at Doranda police station in Ranchi. Later, the CBI took over the case.
The case pertains to withdrawal of Rs 139.35 crore from Doranda treasury. Special CBI court headed by Judge S K Shashi had finished hearing against Prasad and 99 others accused in the scam in February last year. The scam came into light in January 1996, after a raid at the Animal husbandry department. Few months later in June 1997, Prasad was named as an accused.
The scam refers to illegal withdrawals worth Rs 950 crore from various government treasuries for fictitious expenditure on fodder and other equipment while Prasad was the chief minister.
