Nagpur: The United Kingdom Prime Minister Boris Johnson on Monday said that one person who got infected with the Omicron variant has died.

Johnson said, “Sadly, at least one patient has been confirmed to have died with Omicron.” He also warned of a tidal wave of infection from the mutation. Johnson added, “So I think the idea that this is somehow a milder version of the virus – I think that’s something we need to set on one side – and just recognise the sheer pace at which it accelerates through the population.”

The first case of the Omicron variant was detected on November 27 which forced Johnson to impose tougher restrictions. In the latest, the UK has also made it mandatory for people above the age of 30 to take a booster vaccine to increase the immunity and in a hope to manage the spread of the Omicron variant.

UK Health secretary Sajid Javid said the Omicron variant was spreading at a ‘phenomenal rate’ and accounted for 40 per cent of infections in London. Javid added, “It’s spreading at a phenomenal rate, something that we’ve never seen before, it’s doubling every two to three days in infections.”

The World Health Organisation (WHO) has claimed that the Omicron variant is much more transmissible than the Delta variant and also reduced the vaccine efficacy to an extent.
