Nagpur: Due to a surge in Covid-19 cases, China has placed Lanzhou city with a population of over four million in strict lockdown and have asked the residents to leave their residences only if there is an emergency.

China recorded 29 new cases of the novel coronavirus with six of them reported from Lanzhou. Soon after cases were reported, a lockdown was announced. China on Monday put thousands of people in Northern China under lockdown after there was a rise in cases due to the Delta variant outbreak.

Beijing has cancelled the ‘Beijing Marathon’ until further notice and has restricted entry and exit amid a surge in Covid-19 infections. China has reported over 130 cases across 11 provinces so far and all of them are reportedly to be linked to the Delta variant. Organisers of the marathon told the BBC that they were cancelling next weekend’s race “in order to prevent the risk of the epidemic spreading (and) effectively protect the health and safety of the majority of runners, staff and residents.”

China has cancelled over a hundred of flights, closed down schools and ramped up mass Covid-19 testing due to a surge in the novel coronavirus cases again.

Beijing has planned to launch mass testing as four new cases of Covid-19 cases were found in a suburban district on Friday. China has maintained sero-Covid-19 strategy with borders closed, quarantines and lockdowns. However, the numbers reported in the country are less as compared to other countries globally, but Chinese cities are quick to contain outbreaks under tough national guidelines of zero tolerance.

Changping district in Beijing has banned people in risk-prone areas from leaving their residences and has suspended physical classes in schools.
